An illuminating Argentina and Brazil tour with sultry cities, chart-topping waterfalls and graceful Patagonian whales – includes tours, breakfast and all travel, plus optional superior hotels

Day 1: UK/Ireland - Night on board

Fly to the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, spending the night on board. If your flight departs in the early hours (before 4am), you must arrive at the airport the night before.

Day 2: Buenos Aires, Argentina

After checking into your downtown hotel on arrival, wander over to see the Obelisco and the stately Teatro Colón opera venue nearby. If your flight arrives very early, you can book early check-in in the next step of the booking process.

Day 3: Buenos Aires, Argentina

You'll most likely fall in love with this capital on today's tour. Snap Caminito's multicoloured houses in La Boca neighbourhood and see elegant La Recoleta's faded elegance. Stroll San Telmo's cobbled streets and the slick port area of Puerto Madero. Finish in leafy Palermo. Later, there's an optional dinner and tango show (£64 per person).

Day 4: Buenos Aires - Estancia Santa Susana - Buenos Aires, Argentina

You'll embrace country life just outside the city today, spending time at an estancia (a typical farmhouse) with 1200 hectares of farmland. Learn about gauchos, the nation's traditional cowboys, and feast on a classic asado (barbecue) lunch. Afterwards, return to Buenos Aires.

Day 5: Buenos Aires, Argentina

You can roam freely today. If you've been satiated by the city, there's an optional half-day boat excursion to the Tigre Delta to see Río de la Plata river scenery and visit the historic town of San Isidro (£46 per person).

Day 6: Buenos Aires - Puerto Madryn, Argentina

It's time to fly south into vast Patagonia, once land of the dinosaurs and now home to equally thrilling wildlife. You'll arrive in Puerto Madryn, a coastal city in northern Patagonia, and transfer to your chic waterside hotel. The rest of the day is yours.

Day 7: Puerto Madryn, Argentina

You'll be blown away by Mother Nature today on a whale watching excursion to Peninsula Valdés, looking out for Southern Right Whales. Orcas are also known to frequent these waters.

Day 8: Puerto Madryn, Argentina

Take a day to unravel Puerto Madryn at your own pace. There's an optional excursion to El Pedral penguin colony (available 15 September to 10 December; £79 per person) and another to snorkel with sea lions (£63 per person).

Day 9: Puerto Madryn - Iguazú, Argentina

You'll fly far north to tropical climes this morning to witness the potent Iguazú Falls. The rest of the day is at your leisure to unwind at the hotel or delve into the rainforest.

Day 10: Iguazú, Argentina

See Argentina's jaw-dropping side of Iguazú Falls, taking the train to the Devil's Throat to marvel at water gushing down an 80-metre sheer drop. There's an optional excursion to get closer to the falls. (£66 per person)

Day 11: Iguazú, Argentina

Discover the Brazilian side of Iguazú Falls today for a different perspective of this natural wonder. Afterwards, return to the Argentine side of the falls.

Day 12: Iguazú - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Today you'll say "Chau" to Argentina and fly to sensual Rio de Janeiro in southern Brazil. Perhaps begin with a sunset stroll along Copacabana and Ipanema's legendary shores.

Day 13: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

It's time to get intimate with Rio on a city tour. You'll be driven up to the summit of the famous Corcovado mountain, before seeing the Sambadrome carnival hub, the Selarón Steps and Maracanã Stadium.

Day 14: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

You can plan your own itinerary today, or take an optional excursion to Sugar Loaf Mountain for spectacular bay views (£49 per person).

Day 15: Rio de Janeiro - UK (night on board)

It's finally time to leave South America and fly back to the UK/Ireland, spending the night on board.
